Are You Ready???

The Lady Well Fete will be held on August 15th in the beautiful grounds of Slane castle.

On that weekend visitors will travel from far and wide to visit the holy well in the castle grounds. The day features a variety of fun events and activities for all the family. This year events include a ’masters’ game of Gaelic football, Irish dancing, music, junior soccer and Gaelic, dog trials, tours of Slane castle, pony and trap rides, a pets corner, side shows, sack races, a variety of fine food stalls, magic shows, street entertainment, a duck derby next to the Boyne, and lots of other activities.

The goal of the committee is to promote the Lady Well day while promoting tourism and raising funds to enhance the village. Projects already completed include the clearance and improvements at the Lady Well itself which was damaged by high floodwaters in 2008. Current projects include the Slane tourism brochure, new street signs for the village and a contribution towards this year’s village Christmas tree.

The committee put in a huge effort to make this year’s event even more action packed and enjoyable than last year’s great success. The committee hoped to build on last year with a view to having a truly wonderful weekend in 2010 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the historic Georgian village of Slane.

Billed as a family day out, the day proved to be especially popular with children. The events on the day were community driven with sporting fixtures including local GAA and soccer competitions.

The children were kept entertained with a race car track, a magician, a brilliant North Meath Macra na Feirme dunk tank, and kids sports.  Other activities included vintage cars, coracles, Irish dancing, castle tours, a dancing Chinese dragon, traditional music, a hot air balloon, pony and trap rides, dog shows, and a falconry display not to mention a country market with 30 to 40 different stalls.

There was live entertainment all day featuring the very entertaining Rathkenny Revels, the Mongey stage school, the Wardick dance school, the O'Carolan harpists from Nobber, Wayne Brennan, Gordon Leonard, Owen Rock, Alan Buckley, Alan Louth, Des Reilly, and Eugene Gallagher.

The traditional event was revived two years ago to coincide with the annual Lady Well celebration on August 15th, when the Lady Well water is deemed to be holy. Water rises in an opening in the woodland of Slane Castle and generations of local people have made the journey to draw it every August 15th.
