The Lady Well Fete is filled with fun & activities for the whole family with everything from live music to a hot air balloon.
Please see below for more details:
The annual Lady Well Fete at Slane Castle will be even bigger this year with a range of new events added to the activities.
The community of Slane will hold the annual Lady Well Fete at Slane Castle on Sunday 21st August and new activities include gundog demonstrations with a chance to enter your own dog on the day, live cowpat roulette where you can punt on where the cow pats, free giant sandpits and magicians for the kids, and a bucking bronco for the brave.
Central to the day will be sporting fixtures, which include both senior and junior local GAA and soccer games. One of the highlights last year was the local senior game between Slane and Rathkenny and this year promises to be a great game as the two sides battle it out to win the Village Inn Lady Well Trophy.
There are also fun races open to children of all ages. Other activities include a kids racecar track, face-painting, fly-fishing demonstrations, vintage car displays, hot air balloons and tours of the castle. The fete will also include a country market with a wide selection of food, arts and crafts and a duck derby with generous prizes. All the proceeds from the fete will go towards local causes and last year the organising committee was able to make a cash donation to all the voluntary organisations in Slane village.
The day kicks off at 1pm and admission is €5 per adult with children free. For those coming by car, the entrance to the car park is on the N51 Slane-Navan road, just beyond the castle gates on the left hand side. If coming from Slane village, the main pedestrian entrance is opposite Castle Gardens in Slane village. Food and toilets will be available and no alcohol will be served on site.
Lord Alex Mount Charles said: "Given the current economic difficulties we have been delighted with the support shown by both the local community and our generous sponsors. Our aim is to give the people of Slane and beyond a great family day out and with the extra activities this year we plan to do just that. It is a genuine pleasure to be able to celebrate this as a community in the Castle grounds."
The Lady Well Fete in August was celebrated for centuries in Slane at the Lady Well, which rises in an opening in the woodland of the Slane Castle Demesne. Thousands of people make the journey to the woods every year to drink from the well and, traditionally, a fete was held in the adjoining field below the castle. The local community revived the fete four years ago as a fundraising venture for village projects.
Also on the day Slane Castle will host its first ever 10mile and 5km road race. The 10 mile (starts at 12.00pm) and 5km (starts at 12.15pm) run will start and finish in the grounds of the famous Slane Castle.
